Recently, we learned that suicide rates of military veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq had reached alarming rates. Twenty-two vets commit suicide each day! At that moment we wanted to help in any way that we could. Returning veterans are often devastated physically, mentally and emotionally. They return with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Many have emotional problems and have difficulty coping with the return home. The government reports that approximately 11 – 20% of returning vets suffer from PTSD or TBI. Nationally, the demand for a service dog is much higher than the supply.
Wings-and-Warriors will take dogs from shelters, match with veterans, and train them together. The training takes 7 months to 2 years to complete but will last a lifetime. The mission is to "save lives one step at a time".
